Entitled Impressionism and the North, this exhibition focuses on the unique way in which Nordic artists encountered, reacted to and diverged from Impressionism in the late 19th century.

It challenges the enduring myth that these artists merely imitated their French contemporaries, instead revealing how they drew on an intimate understanding of Northern light, atmosphere, and colour to forge a distinctly Nordic form of early modernism.

At the heart of the exhibition is a presentation of five pioneering women artists: Berthe Wegmann (1846-1926), Ellen Jolin (1854-1939), Hanna Hirsch Pauli (1864-1940), Beda Stjernschantz (1867-1910) and Maja Fjaestad (1873-1961). Together, their works demonstrate the diverse and ambitious production of women artists during this period, who would in turn inspire the next generation in Scandinavia.
